How Long Do VHS Tapes Last? (Why You Should Digitise Them Soon)
Many people still have boxes of VHS tapes stored in cupboards or garages. These tapes often contain irreplaceable family memories, but magnetic tape does not last forever.
Most VHS tapes have an estimated lifespan of 15–30 years depending on storage conditions.
Over time several problems can occur:
• Magnetic signal loss
• Colour fading
• Tracking instability
• Tape stretching
• Mold or contamination
Even if a tape still plays, the video quality may already be degrading.
Because of this, it is recommended that VHS tapes be digitised as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration.
At Video to Digital Conversions, we carefully capture VHS footage using professional playback equipment and convert it to modern digital formats that can be safely stored and backed up.
