U-matic was widely used by television, government departments, educational institutions, businesses and archives, as well as for professional and industrial video production. Today, working U-matic equipment is becoming increasingly scarce, making preservation of these recordings particularly important.
Why digitise U-matic tapes?
U-matic tapes can now be several decades old. As magnetic tape ages, deterioration can affect both the physical tape and the recorded signal.
Depending on its condition and storage history, an older tape may exhibit picture instability, dropouts, contamination, mould or other playback problems. At the same time, maintaining suitable U-matic playback equipment is becoming increasingly difficult.
Digitising the recording allows the content to be preserved independently of the original tape and obsolete playback equipment.
Our professional U-matic workflow
We don't simply connect an old video machine to a cheap USB capture device.
Each U-matic tape is assessed before transfer and the cassette and tape condition are checked for obvious problems. Where necessary, tapes can be cleaned or prepared before playback.
The recording is then played using dedicated Sony U-matic equipment, with the analogue video signal passed through our professional video workflow and captured using Blackmagic Design hardware.
Where appropriate, Time Base Correction (TBC) and other signal-stabilisation equipment can be incorporated into the workflow to help manage timing instability common to ageing analogue recordings.
Each tape is captured in real time and the resulting digital files are checked after transfer.
Archival-quality transfers available
For historically significant or irreplaceable material, we can also provide high-quality archival capture files rather than relying solely on a compressed MP4 delivery copy.

An archival master can be retained for preservation, while a smaller MP4 copy can also be produced for convenient viewing and sharing.

For everyday viewing, we can provide convenient MP4 files compatible with modern computers and televisions.
For archival projects, higher-quality preservation files can also be supplied.
Tape condition & difficult recordings
Because of the age of U-matic material, we assess tapes before putting them through our equipment.
If we discover mould, contamination, physical tape damage or another issue requiring additional treatment, we'll discuss this with you before carrying out additional work.
For particularly valuable collections, we can also discuss the most appropriate preservation workflow before commencing the project.
Australia-wide U-matic digitisation
You don't need to be in Perth to use our U-matic transfer service.
We accept tapes from anywhere in Australia through our mail-in service, making specialist U-matic digitisation available to archives, organisations and private customers nationwide.
Local customers can arrange drop-off in Atwell, with our Balcatta drop-off point also available.
