Not all video conversion services are the same. Many cheaper “backyard” services cut corners by using basic USB capture devices and composite (yellow cable) connections, which can result in unstable images, poor colour, dropped frames, and audio sync issues. We clean and service our machines every 3 weeks. This is imperitve and we do not use tape cleaners but pull the machine down and manually clean the heads, rollers etc.

When we convert MiniDV and Digital8 (Hi8 Digital) tapes, we don’t treat them like old analogue formats — because they aren’t. These tapes already store video in a digital format, so the best possible way to preserve them is to transfer the data directly via Firewire.

We take a professional approach to every transfer that is analog. Our workflow includes Time Base Correction (TBC) to stabilise the signal, high-quality capture hardware, and where possible we capture directly from the digital source rather than converting through analogue first. Our VCR systems also use S-Video outputs passed through TBC equipment to produce a cleaner, more accurate picture.

Most people only digitise their tapes once — so it’s worth doing properly.

Your memories deserve the best possible quality and care, not the cheapest shortcut.

Types of video we convert

Mini DV

These formats are the most modern cassette tape types that you’ll find. If you had a camcorder in the later 1990s or early 2000s, that camcorder likely utilized the miniDV format, which offered a clearer picture than analog tapes than the previous formats.

Video8, Hi8, and Digital8

Thease are all 8mm video formats that were commonly used in camcorders since they were the first videocassette formats that were small enough to easily fit into a camcorder.

VHS-C is a compact version of the VHS format, introduced by  JVC in 1982 and used primarily in consumer-grade analog recording camcorders
